The original school building was an old mess hall located between Hull Stree and Armstead Drive . It was named for General Manager Fred D. McCracker.
The Fred d. McCracker School had 102 students with 3 teachers and housed grades 1-7.later land was purchased at the intersection of Key Road (now Portsmouth Blvd) and Deep Creek Blvd. in October 1920 the School's name changed went they moved in the new building .Truxtun School opened with Virginus Carney a Portsmouth native and Lincoln,Howard and Yale University graduate as the Principal. Members of the first Truxtun School committee were Thomas Tucker (Chairman) Robert W.Hester,Daniel Dehaney,John Calvin Booker and Miss Maud Gambol (sec)
The first teaches were Miss Queenie Ester Lassiter,Mattie Chesson and Clara Harris..in 1920 Ethel Haywood and Madge Miles join the faculty. Mrs Pauline Dillard Jeffers joined the staff in 1922.
In 1934 Irene B. Gray,Marion Watts,Gertrude C.Sharp Rosa Woodard and Beatrice Robertson also join the faculty.
In 1946 Corrine Potts, Lucy Cuffey Gwendolyn Aske Quintelia Brown,Rosa V Daughtry,Josephine Lighter, Mary B. Lewter ,Ethel Hutchins Fannie Colding and Thelma Mae Lindsay became part of the Truxtun School family. Many of these teachers served on the faculty for more than 30 years.
W H Willis served as principal from 1922-1947 when he retired and was replaced by John H. Carey.
The first class included Ada Gardner,Linwood Trotter,Austin Booker, Edgar Gardner and Geraldine Foster.
Truxtun School closed in 1970
