Truxtun was noted for it's self-reliance and self-containment.
The Johnson's (of Bagley Street) were a family of entrepreneurs.Gattie Johnson Daughtry Ashe (marrried Rev. Ashe,Pastor of St. Mark Bapt. Church)
owned a beauty shopand her brother ,Talmadge owned a grocery store. The Johnson's also open a park (1936-38). Other stores in the Truxtun Business district included David Pender (DP"s Grocery store,Lewter's Drugstore/Confectionery,owned by Crafton Lewter (also of Bagley St.) Brandon's Vegetable Market,Nic Nac "s Shoe Shine Parlor and Confectionery (owned by Henry "Nic Nac" Stancil

during the 1920's and 30's whites owned two filling stations (the Wheelers and Moskovitch's)
The Moskovitch was purchased by a group of young Truxtun men called the Vikings . The Gas station became a restaurant(corner of Deep Creek and Downes) The Wheeler's gas station was purchased by Talmadge Johnson.Property owned by Earl Parker housed a 5 &10 cent store. Other early Truxtun Businesses included Truxtun Cleaner,The Skating Rink, A clay Tennis Court build by Bill Myers and a number of shops located between A.C. Smith's Victorian House and Johnson's Grocery Store.

September 1st & 2nd 1949 Truxtun Celebrated it's 30th Anniversary. It also marked the Third Anniversary of North Truxtun 1946-1949 and The Second Anniversary of West Truxtun 1947-1949. The planning committee for this celebration included D.H. Haywood,Luther Johnson,Mary B. Lewter,R.W. Hester,Thomas Tucker,Vincent Skeeter,Lillian Jones,Rev.T.H. The theme for the celebration was Success Through Cooperation.
EARLY LEADERS
Fred D. McCracken had the distinction of being the only black town manager in the United states. he enjoyed this title from the time of Truxtun's inception until 1921.McCracken directly supervise the sale of houses in Truxtun . during his tenure as town manager ,he collected over $200,000 for the USHC.Truxtun was selfsustained and most felt thai it had proposed and developed under his wise guidance
The Mayor of Truxtun
Thomas Trucker,(pictured on the left bottom picture) considered by many to be the Mayor of Truxtun served as the Chairman of Truxtun Town Council and School Committee while Truxtun was still a township of Norfolk County.Tucker was one of the first to move to the new Truxtun development. He purchased a duplex at 58 Gosport Rd. The Tucker's were the second family to move into that block. the first was R.W. Hester who also served on the School Committee
