The Historical Truxtun Civic League was founded in June of 2005 by Ronald Lucus,Chester Benton,Robert"Bobby Smith" and Beverly Gray. The Mission of the Historical Truxtun Civic League is to maintain an environment that is Safe,Clean,and Attractive. While Restoring the Pride and Preserve the Heritage.
Truxtun was the first planned community for (African-American) colored people in the United States.
U.S. Housing Project #150C was a planned community to house colored shipyard workers in 1919. The housing development was named after Thomas Truxtun, a Revolutionary War Era Naval Commander. The Development was designed with 5 -room houses (203 detached,50 semi-detached)to accommodate 253 families (1265 people).Original designs also included plans for a school,church,community house/center,movie theater,small railroad station and 35 shops/stores. ,
The Truxtun Township was annexed to Portsmouth in 1923.
Truxtun was noted for its self-reliance and self-containment. The Historical Truxtun Civic League, with the help of the City of Portsmouth,The Wilson Ward Civic League, Old Truxtun Community League, and current and former residents are working hard to again make Truxtun a community we all can be proud of.
