Truxtun and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard both have great histories.It was because the shipyard needed a place to house colored workers that the United State government constructed Truxtun(43 acres) the "first and only "development for colored in U.S. (U.S. Housing Project #150c .


During World War two Truxtun women worked in th Shipyard Blueprint Shop
they were Lucille Goodwyn,Katherine "Miss Ditty Bowser,Christine Moss, Mae Pope Helen Banks and Lucy Moody Overton.
Hobson Street shipyard workers included Joseph Watkins who purchased 49 hobson st in 1919 with is salary as a rigger ..his great granddaughters Marsha Moore ,Jean Lassiter Wyche,Paula Lassiter and Tracy Pierce work at the shipyard today,
George Moody was a boilermaker for 34 years,James Reavis sr..38 years Shop 11,Cl;arence Scarbor Sr 30years,John "Drum" Overton Sr 36 years retired as Foreman of painter shop 07,William"Kado" Rogers 40years Machinist, Clifton"Buzz"Lassieter ,Stacey Brandon,Hop Anderson and Joseph Mickey Brown . 
On Manly Street John Baker Sr.(his son John Jr became the first Truxtun athlete to play pro football,his youngest son Jenson was f the first black coach at Cradock High school,Clarence Southall Sr.,tony Boatknight, Cohn Casper,Enot Carrington, James Harrison (1st black asst. Fire Chief) Willie Lee Casper ,John davis worked 48 years in the drydock..his son Dan Davis worked 30 years as a sandblaster,Wilbert Bailey who started as a pipefitter and retired 30 years later as a Planner/Estimator,Bill Miles,Beulah Deberry ,Linwood "Bone Daddy" Southall ,Slick Bailey,Harry lee Jones, Jim Carter,George Harrison Jr.recieved 5 awards for beneficial suggestions as a toolroom attendant and Benjamin smith Sr served 31` years in Shop 72 as one of the 1st black laborer Supervisors.
These are just a few of the hard working men and women who made a honest living and help build a strong community while working at the shipyard.
